Fort Myers Midtown Redevelopment Breaks Ground
The City of Fort Myers has kicked off Phase 1 of the Midtown Redevelopment Plan, a nearly $29.5 million infrastructure overhaul of the 243-acre district south of downtown bounded by MLK Jr. Boulevard, Broadway Avenue, Victoria Avenue, and Central Avenue. The project will replace aging water, sewer, and stormwater systems while rebuilding streets, widening sidewalks, adding bike trails, lighting, landscaping, pocket parks, and street furniture, laying the foundation for future residential, retail, and commercial development. Private School Enrollment Surging Across Southwest Florida
The Diocese of Venice, which oversees more than 15 Catholic schools across Southwest Florida, reports enrollment has increased more than 40% over the last six years, driven by Florida's universal school choice program and the region's population growth. In Lee County alone, the number of students using state scholarships nearly doubled from 3,454 in 2022-23 to 7,154 in 2025-26, with the county receiving $56.3 million in scholarship funding last school year. Parking at the Beach Just Got Real Complicated

Four years after Hurricane Ian, federal funding has come through and major restoration projects are now officially underway at both Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Beach. Parking and beach access will be significantly limited for the next several months. Plan to pack your patience with your sunscreen. Here is what you need to know before heading to the beach.

Fort Myers Beach

Two major projects are now underway on Fort Myers Beach. The $3.9 million Bowditch Point Regional Park restoration began September 8, with the entire 17-acre park at 50 Estero Blvd. completely fenced off and no parking available. Pedestrians can still access the beach along the south side of the construction site. Lynn Hall Memorial Park at 950 Estero Blvd. has been under construction since April as part of a $6 million project replacing the park's 146-space parking lot, boardwalks, restrooms, and picnic shelters, with parking unavailable until late spring of 2027.

Beachgoers are encouraged to use the LeeTran Beach Park & Ride at 11101 Summerlin Square Drive, which offers 125 free parking spaces. A $2 all-day pass gets you on the Beach Trolley Route 490, running directly to Crescent Beach Family Park every 30 minutes, with Route 410 connecting Bowditch Point to Lovers Key. Tickets can be purchased on board, on the Lee Fare App. Privately owned parking lots are available on Fort Myers Beach, but expect to pay $20 or more per day.

Fort Myers Beach public parking lots, note both lee county parking lots listed are closed

Bonita Beach

Bonita Beach Park at 27954 Hickory Blvd. and Little Hickory Island Beach Park at 26082 Hickory Blvd. both closed September 8 for a combined $6.95 million restoration of boardwalks, pavilions, showers, restrooms, and parking lots. Portable restrooms are available outside the Little Hickory construction site. Bonita Beach Access No. 1 at 27890 Hickory Blvd. will remain open for pedestrian beach access until November, when it will also close for parking lot restoration.

Getting to Bonita Beach: ULTRA On Demand Transit

For Bonita Beach, LeeTran is recommending beachgoers park at the Publix parking lot at US-41 and Bonita Beach Road and use the ULTRA On Demand Transit service to get to the beach. Think of ULTRA less like a traditional bus and more like a shared Uber, it will pick you up and drop you off anywhere within the Bonita Springs service zone for just $3 one way. Tickets are available on the ULTRA On Demand Transit app.

One important tip from personal experience: schedule your rides well in advance. On a Wednesday afternoon, the earliest available pickup was three hours out. On a busy weekend, I can only imagine the wait. Book your ride to the beach AND your return trip before at least the day before, or you could find yourself stranded at the beach waiting hours for a ride back to your car. Also worth noting, children under 5 are required to be in a car seat that you provide yourself. Not exactly ideal, but good to know before you start planning your beach outing.

The highlighted yellow section shows the Ultra service area in Bonita Springs

Fort Myers Beach Parking Rates May Be Going Up

On top of reduced parking availability, Fort Myers Beach is also considering a significant increase in hourly parking rates, with the Local Planning Agency scheduled to discuss raising the current $2 per hour rate. No final decision has been made yet, but stay tuned for updates.

Most projects are expected to take nearly a year to complete. The beaches themselves remain open throughout all construction.

Did You Know?

I know there are a lot of amazing dining deals happening around SWFL this month with Sizzle Dining, but did you know that Hooked Island Grill in Gulf Coast Town Center offers “All You Can Eat Snow Crab” every Sunday and Monday for just $60 with up to 7 reorders? Mr. Squeeze made it through 5 rounds before he tapped out and said they were cooked perfectly! Limited to those two days only, so mark your calendar!
