Lee County Commits $50 Million to Remake Mike Greenwell Park and Replace the Lee Civic Center
Lee County commissioners unanimously approved $50 million in federal disaster-recovery funding to overhaul the 100-acre Mike Greenwell Regional Park in North Fort Myers, home of the Lee Civic Center since 1978. Early plans include a new community and education center of about 30,000 square feet, upgraded 4-H barns, new trails and lighting, and possibly an outdoor amphitheater. Design and permitting will take about 30 months, with completion targeted for 2031. Residents and commissioners are pushing for a bigger replacement venue. (Gulfshore Business)
Everglades City Blesses Its Stone Crab Fleet Ahead of Opening Day
Stone crab season opens Oct. 15, and Everglades City sent its crabbers off the old-fashioned way. Last Saturday, the town held its 17th annual Blessing of the Fleet at Camellia Street Grill. Faith leaders prayed over each boat while families and neighbors walked from vessel to vessel, asking for a safe season. It won't be a cheap one: crabber Macbeth Collins says his fuel costs have doubled since last year. (WINK News)
FGCU Student Opens a Barbershop With Gaming Consoles and a Pool Table
Jose Cintron, a 21-year-old FGCU student, opened Hause of Fades on Sept. 28 in the University Village shopping center, at 19800 Village Center Drive, Suite 155. The nearly 2,000-square-foot shop pairs what Cintron calls an "old-school, traditional, community feel" with 17 barber chairs, big-screen TVs, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, and a pool table. Walk-in cuts are $40 for adults, $45 with a beard trim, $30 for kids 12 and under and $25 for seniors. (Gulfshore Business)
Quick Announcements
Fresh Kitchen, the build-your-own-bowl spot with an entirely gluten-free menu, is coming to south Fort Myers in spring 2027, taking over the former Arby's off Alico Road, across from Gulf Coast Town Center; it'll be the chain's first in Lee County and could be followed by two or three more in the Fort Myers area.
Tropical Storm Isaias is headed for the northern Gulf Coast and isn't expected to directly affect Lee or Collier, but forecasters warn of rough seas and a higher rip current risk from Thursday through the weekend, so take care at the beach.
The City of Fort Myers is replacing its utility billing system, in place since 2003, with a new Oracle system for water, wastewater and solid waste customers that will handle everything from accounts and payments to meter readings and service requests. Proposals from vendors are due Oct. 14, work begins in January, and the City aims to have it running by July 2027.
A Chick-fil-A with an indoor playground is planned for Midtown at Bonita, the 68-acre development on Bonita Beach Road just east of I-75 that's also bringing Chipotle, Panera, Starbucks, TJ Maxx and more; no opening date yet, as the location turned up in permit filings rather than an official announcement.

Naples Zoo Welcomes Its First-Ever Screamer Chicks
Naples Zoo is celebrating a first: three southern crested screamer chicks, the first of their species ever hatched at the zoo. The chicks were born Aug. 10 to parents Jamie Lee, 4, and Peggy, 13, who were paired through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan. Native to the wetlands and marshes of South America, the chicks are growing fast, losing their soft down and getting their adult feathers, and they're expected to fledge within about a month. Guests will be able to see the whole family together on habitat later this month.
