Bonita Estero Rail Trail (BERT) — $60M Deal Is Official A landmark agreement has been reached for the long-awaited trail. The nonprofit Trust for Public Land is planning to purchase 11.4 miles of unused railroad corridor from Seminole Gulf Railway for $60 million, paving the way for the creation of the Bonita Estero Rail Trail. Estero would pay $19.8 million for its 4.1-mile portion, Collier County $11.6 million for 1.5 miles, and Bonita Springs $28.5 million for a 5.8-mile segment. This is a major milestone for the region after years of advocacy.(Gulfshore Business)
Ancient Shells Restore Oyster Reef in Caloosahatchee River
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation completed a three-acre oyster reef restoration near Shell Point in San Carlos Bay using six million pounds of ancient fossilized shells from a Charlotte County mine near Babcock Ranch. The shells, tens of thousands of years old, come from underground layers that used to be bay bottom. Baby oysters are already attaching to the shells after just one week. The reef aims to restore habitat where 90% of oysters were destroyed by road construction, droughts, and Lake Okeechobee flood releases. (WGCU)
Lunar Eclipse March 3: Moon Sets Before Totality Ends in SWFL
A total lunar eclipse will occur on March 3, 2026, but Southwest Florida won't see the full show. Totality happens at 6:33 a.m., but the moon sets around 6:50 a.m. before totality ends, meaning SWFL will see about 45 minutes of the blood moon phase. The best views will be in the western U.S. and Florida Panhandle. No special glasses needed for viewing. Cape Coral viewing window: 3:44 a.m. to 6:51 a.m. Naples viewing window: 3:44 a.m. to 6:50 a.m. Fort Myers area will have similar times. (Yahoo)

Taking Flight: Local EAA Chapters Inspire the Next Generation of Aviators

Want to give a young person the thrill of their first airplane ride, completely free? Southwest Florida's two Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapters offer Young Eagles rallies that provide free introductory flights to youth ages 8-17*, no experience necessary. EAA Chapter 66, based at Page Field in Fort Myers since 1962, flies an average of 15 young people each month during their first-Sunday pancake breakfast rallies. Sign up for Fort Myers Young Eagles here. Meanwhile, EAA Chapter 1067 in Naples recently relocated their rallies to WingSouth Airpark, allowing them to accommodate more than 25 kids per event. Sign up for next Naples Young Eagles here. These free flights are designed to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of pilots, and parents are welcome to watch from the ground as volunteer pilots share their passion for flight.
Beyond the monthly rallies, both chapters create vibrant aviation communities where enthusiasts gather to build, learn, and fly together. Fort Myers' Chapter 66 hosts weekly "Builders Night" every Thursday evening, where members construct a Thatcher TX 4 aircraft while others practice on flight simulators, plus "Friday Franks" lunch gatherings and monthly meetings on the third Tuesday. Naples' Chapter 1067 has made remarkable strides in youth education, awarding over $20,000 in scholarships last year with six Ray Scholarship recipients all earning their private pilot certificates. The chapter partnered with Naples Youth Aviation to help students build a Sling 2 aircraft that's now used to fly Young Eagles. Some flights are piloted by the very kids who built it.
Whether you have a child interested in aviation or you're an adult looking to join a community of builders, pilots, and enthusiasts, these local EAA chapters offer hands-on opportunities to engage with the world of flight. Fort Myers Chapter 66 meets the third Tuesday of each month, and Naples Chapter 1067 gathers the first Wednesday at the Pilots Lounge at Naples Municipal Airport. Visit EAAChapter66.org for Fort Myers information or search EAA Chapter 1067 on Facebook for Naples details.
*Fort Myers flights are available for ages 11-17; Naples flights accommodate ages 8-17. Naples' next Young Eagles rally is scheduled for April.
Fur-ever Home Feature

Meet Brooks, he is a handsome young Siberian Husky with bright eyes and a playful spirit. He is 1 years old and already has great house manners. He is potty trained, crate trained, and walks nicely on a leash like the true gentleman he is. He gets along with other dogs, both big and small, and would do best in a home with another playful pup and a fenced yard where he can safely stretch his legs. His compatibility with cats is unknown but is good with older children.
