Falling Iguanas
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission collected 5,195 cold-stunned iguanas this weekend under a temporary order that allowed citizens to transport the immobilized reptiles. All of the iguanas, which are considered an invasive species in Florida, were euthanized following the collection effort.

Bright Blue-Green Meteor Lights Up SWFL Sky
A spectacular blue-green fireball rivaling the full moon in brightness was spotted across Florida on February 2 at 9:37 p.m., detected by two NASA meteor cameras. The meteor, caused by a small asteroid fragment traveling at 71,600 miles per hour, was first spotted 56 miles above the Gulf west of Bonita Springs and traveled northwest for 60 miles before disintegrating 28 miles above the ocean, with NASA noting that February marks the beginning of fireball season for the Northern Hemisphere.(Palm Beach Post)

Immokalee's D'Ernest Johnson Heads to Super Bowl with Patriots
D'Ernest Johnson, a 2014 Immokalee High School graduate, will represent his hometown at Super Bowl LX after a winding NFL journey that included being cut twice this season before landing with the New England Patriots. The 29-year-old running back carved out a role as a special-teams player, returning five kickoffs for 128 yards, and now stands one game away from becoming the eighth Southwest Florida former resident to win a Super Bowl ring, with former coach Rich Dombroski calling him "the ultimate team guy."(Naples Daily News)

Florida Lawmakers Advance Mandatory Cursive Writing Bill
Florida lawmakers filed legislation requiring elementary school students in second through fifth grade to learn cursive writing, with the House Education & Employment Committee passing the bill on Thursday. The bill would mandate instruction in letter formation, spacing, alignment, and complete sentence writing, with students tested on cursive skills at the end of fifth grade before it goes into effect in July 2026 if approved.(Fox4)

  • Did you know Bonita Springs Historical Society offers Downtown Walking Tours?

  • Fort Myers Roller Derby is holding tryouts on February 6th and 9th

  • The City of Bonita Springs is hosting a Community Workshop to gather public input on the future Bonita Springs Aquatic Center. The open house will take place Thursday, February 19, from 5–7 p.m. at the Bonita Springs Rec Center. Residents are invited to stop by and share feedback on the next-generation aquatic facility.

  • The Village of Estero will be holding a public outreach meeting on the “Comprehensive Vulnerability Assessment” to evaluate the “potential impacts of flooding and other climate hazards on critical assets and infrastructure.”Wednesday, Feb. 25,4 :30 until 6:30 PM at the Estero Recreation Center

  • Estero Community Yard Sale is set for March 7 at the Estero Recreation Center. Registration is now open for sellers, with spots available for $5 each. Contact the Rec Center to reserve your space.

Spring Training Returns to SWFL

Forget Punxsutawney Phil, in Southwest Florida, we don't wait for a groundhog to tell us winter is ending. The real sign of winter is coming to an end, is Spring Training! The Boston Red Sox equipment truck departed Fenway Park on Monday, making its annual 1,480-mile journey to Fort Myers loaded with 20,400 baseballs, 1,100 bats, and enough sunflower seeds to last through March. The beloved "Truck Day" tradition, now in its 23rd year, officially kicks off Spring Training season, transforming Southwest Florida into baseball's winter home as teams gear up for 2026.

JetBlue Park at Fenway South and Hammond Stadium at Lee Health Sports Complex will host 36 combined home games beginning February 20th with exhibition matchups. The Grapefruit League season opens February 21st when the Red Sox and Twins face off in Fort Myers. Highlights include appearances by Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic team in early March, the "Futures at Fenway South" prospect showcase March 14th, and the MLB Spring Breakout game March 19th featuring top prospects. Special events include Minnesota Day with pregame tailgating on March 14, College Night with $10 student tickets March 6th, and marquee matchups against the Yankees, Blue Jays, and other MLB powerhouses.

With tickets now on sale and free public workouts beginning next week, fans can experience the intimate, laid-back atmosphere that makes Southwest Florida baseball special. Gates open 90 minutes before first pitch, making it the perfect way to shake off winter and celebrate the return of America's pastime.
